<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Antacids Are Safe
Antacids, such as Rolaids, contain calcium and magnesium and are considered safe. According to a February 2004 article, "Not Quite Nontoxic," written by Mindy G. Bough for the Animal Poison Control Center, "Because GI [gastrointestinal] absorption of these active ingredients is low, serious signs are unlikely." Small doses of Rolaids (under 25 tablets for a 30-lb dog) are safe.
On the Other: There Are Always Exceptions
While Rolaids are typically considered safe for a dog to ingest, treatment may be necessary if your dog has eaten a large number of Rolaids (more than 25 tablets for a 30-lb dog). Some symptoms to watch for include diarrhea, constipation and vomiting.
Bottom Line
If your dog has eaten a small amount of Rolaids, watch for any changes in behavior. If your dog has ingested a larger amount of Rolaids, call your vet or your local animal-emergency clinic.
