Whales were hunted for valuable blubber used to light lamps. But when John D. Rockefeller delivered quality kerosine at low price, the blubber could no longer compete and the whales were saved. Kerosine was so cheap that even poor students could afford to study after dark.

Don't you mean infamous? His tactics and oeverall strategy for building Standard Oil (Exxon, Mobil, Aramco ...) were an inspiration to the Mafia.
