VTEC stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. It is a valve train system Honda developed for improvement of the volumetric efficiency of its four-stroke internal combustion engines.
History
The VTEC technology was invented in 1989 by Honda R&D engineer Ikuo Kajitani.
DOHC
Honda introduced the VTEC engine with a double overhead camshaft valve train layout (DOHC). It made its debut in the United States market with the 1991 Acura NSX.
SOHC
With the popularity of the VTEC engines, Honda introduced versions with a single overhead camshaft valve train layout.
i-VTEC
The i-VTEC (intelligent-VTEC) engines are characterize by continuously variable camshaft phasing. It made its debut in the United States market with the 2003 Honda Civic Si.
AVTEC
The AVTEC (Advanced VTEC) engine, first announced in 2006, is considered the most advanced VTEC engine yet, meant to combine continuously variable valve lift and timing control with continuously variable phase control.
