<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Safest in 2009
The safest small-sized SUVs as of 2009, according to forbes.com, are the Honda CR-V and the Nissan Rogue. In the midsized range, the Toyota Highlander, Subaru Tribeca, Mercedes-Benz M Class, Honda Pilot and the Acura MDX all won top safety classifications.
On the Other: Bigger Is Not Better
No large-size SUV made it in the safest category of the 2009 study. The 2007 Ford Excursion was touted as one of the heaviest and biggest vehicles in 2007, yet it wound up being discontinued due to the high driver death rate compared with that of smaller SUVs.
Bottom Line
When shopping for an SUV, keep in mind important safety features such as electronic stability control (ESC), side airbags, three-point seat belts in the third row and head restraints with whiplash protection. No cautionary measure can take the place of a safe and cautious driver in preventing you from becoming a victim of a car crash.
