Hair loss (alopecia) in dogs can be caused by a number of different diseases and conditions. While some are considered normal, a few can indicate the presence of a serious disease and should be treated promptly.
Dermatitis
Drs. Foster and Smith of PetEducation.com list over ten types of dermatitis conditions that can cause hair loss. Consult a veterinarian to discuss treatment.
Allergies
Allergies are a common cause of scratching, biting, licking and hair loss. Treat allergies by removing the offending allergen if possible. Steroid medication can also help.
Mange
Mange is a serious disease caused by burrowing mites. It usually occurs in dogs who are severely malnourished and is highly contagious. If mange is suspected, keep the dog quarantined until it can be seen by a vet.
Pregnancy
Some dogs loose large quantities of hair during pregnancy or other stressful situations. No treatment is necessary. Hair will grow back.
Seborrhea
Seborrhea can be inherited or secondary to another disease. It causes scales, a dry oily coat and odor, as well as hair loss. Treat with an anti-seborrheic shampoo or fatty acid supplements.
Other Conditions
There are other less common conditions and diseases, such as hypothyroidism and ringworm, that can cause hair loss in dogs. See a vet for a definitive diagnosis.
