Why are they called 'stands' when they're made for sitting?

Because they were originally made for standing. These seats are a new-fangled softy 20th century idea. In the 19th century, men were real men ans stood for the whole match. And on many British football grounds, continued to do so until the 1980s. It is the same as the way modern diesel-powered ships are said to sail even though they haven't a single sail about them.

If you ever go to a British football match, sitting down is something not many people do.
