You're comparing oranges with ironmongery stores. You can compare LimeWire with eTorrent (p2p software), or Gnutella with bittorrent (p2p protocols). The Pirate Bay is a website which you use to find torrents, and then use a torrent program to download the files. I haven't used LimeWire in ages, but I do use torrents a lot. In either case you should take lots of precautions if downloading software - using a good antivirus for instance.
