1) I am about certain that there are also ways of using about any item somehow *without* breaking them first. 2) Wiktionary lists 19 different meanings for the verb "to break", 11 of which are transitive (with things that could be broken). - In the meaning "To cause to end up in two or more pieces", breaking would make a sense for such items as bread. - In the meaning "To cause to malfunction or stop working altogether", no proper use will be possible after the breaking. - In the meaning "To cause a person or animal to lose his/her/its will, usually obtained by means of torture", this would be a traditional (although quite ethically objectionable, to facilitate the "use"): "You have to break an elephant before you can use it as an animal of burden." Source and further information: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/break 3) I am not sure if we can consider breaking the *seal* of something in order to use that thing as breaking the item itself. There are also other examples where you have to break something before being able to do something else, for instance "break the ice".
