  • In some states, a civil partnership is a government-recognized bond with benefits similar to those of marriage. Other states allow them, but don't offer these benefits. The most common complaint leveled about civil unions is that the term "civil union" feels utterly cold and austere - somehow less than marriage. Many will travel to a state that allows same-sex marriage seeking, if for nothing else, the sanctimony associated with the word.
  • "Separate but equal"?
  • It is a "separate but equal" sop when people do not want to grant the same rights as marriage. It does NOT convey the 1000+ rights of marriage.
