  • Welllllll.....IT hurts. But not too bad. The initial piercing is rather unpleasant but that subsides quickly. Your tongue is held with forceps and a hollow needle is pushed through the flesh of your tongue (or whatever else is pierced for that matter). Because the tongue swells, you have to have a barbell piercing long enough to accomodate the swelling. For about a week or ten days you must be very careful to keep the piercing clean. That means very thorough oral hygiene several times a day and after you eat ANYTHING. Eventually the swelling subsides, the tissue heals, and you replace the longer barbell with more permanent jewlery. At that point there is no pain. It is not uncommon though for some people to "play" with the jewlery, tapping it against their teeth etc. which can be a problem. Some piercers don't place the piercing as well as others and it causes the piercee to talk funny for a while. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the worse pain you've ever felt....probably a 3-4 overall.
  • Exactly what the other user said. I have no pain tolerance whatsoever so after I got my tongue pierced, it hurt for almost 2 weeks. It's hard not to talk funny for the first few days only because you're not use to having something stuck to your tongue. My friends all had theirs done and a few of them talked funny and most of them said it didn't hurt for more than a few days and it wasn't "painful" after that, just uncomfortable. But for a week straight I had to rinse with Listerine after ANYTHING I ate or drank. Even after a glass of water. So I rinsed after eating/drinking or every half hour, whichever was first. I took mine out a couple years later because everyone has one. I didn't want to be a "copycat". But it's entirely a personal decision. I still think their neat and I miss mine, it just wasn't for me anymore.
  • i just got my tongue pierced...i have an extremely low pain tolerance and i would give it a 2. the initial piercing did not hurt AT ALL... you could just feel pressure honestly! the only thing that was somewhat uncomfortable for me was my tongue swelling... it swelled pretty bad i woke up every morning with teeth marks on the side.. i could still talk but there were random words that were soo hard to say. DONT SUCK ANYTHING THROUGH A STRAW, it causes something bad i wasnt really payng attention to my piercer but i know its definitely a bad thing, just drink it normally or use a spoon!!!
  • basically very good info offered above. When i got mine done there was only the pain of like a pinch....like maybe when u accidentally bite ur tongue a little and it was when the needle came through the bottom of my tongue and broke through that skin. I would rate the pain i felt as a 1..possibly 2 (and im a wimp...lol). The swelling was not too extreme in my case, but learning to talk...eat...drink with a foreign object impaled in ur tongue is a whole other world. And took a few weeks to master. I thought there was quite a bit of pain the day after i got the piercing and lasted up till about a week later. Because unlike a "normal" wound...u try to keep an ordinary injury from getting bumped or moving around...but with a tongue it is in constant motion...moving around in ur mouth..eating..talking...so while the piercing process was relatively not painful...the healing process caused quite a bit of pain. But i think everyone is different because of different factors. also it seems to take longer to heal if you are one of those nervous..fidgetty ppl (like i am)..always bouncing ur leg...drumming ur fingers, etc...because it is impossible to NOT twiddle with it...moving it around in ur mouth..clacking it..as mentioned above, etc. Even after the 2 weeks or so of healing...for months later if i had a particularly stressful day my tongue would be aching the next day because i must of messed with the piercing exsessively the day prior.
  • First, they put the clamp on your tongue and tighten it really tight. That's the ONLY part that hurts, the clamp. Then, they stab the needle in, which you can't feel AT ALL. Then they twist the ball and it's all over. At first, it won't hurt until maybe a few hours later, then the swelling and such starts.
  • I dont know from personal experience, but I would imagine it hurts like the dickens.
  • A friend of mine got hers pierced and she said it hurt. Think about it though, it hurts when you accidentally cut your tongue or bite down hard on your tongue.. So its gotta hurt when you poke a hole through your tongue! Edit: I've heard nipple piercings are the worst though.
  • Nah, I have mine pierced. It didn't hurt all that bad, my nose piercing hurt hella worse! The clamp is the thing that hurts the most really, & it's not too bad, just like a pinch.
  • I got my tongue pierced 2 weeks ago. I thought the clamp hurt the worst out of the whole deal. The initial piercing isn't going to hurt much. There aren't many nerves in the tongue. Since the tongue is a muscle the needle isn't piercing anything but the top and bottom of the tongue. The needle is just being pushed through the muscle like pushing a needle through fabric. Mine didn't hurt nor did it swell the first day. It was very hard to eat though. The second day it swelled up still not very painful. The third day it was still swollen and more painful, I compare the pain to biting your tongue. It hurts the worst waking up in the morning because the piercing is dried out inside. After a few days getting used to and finally being able to eat and talk normally you will find your muscles in your mouth and jaw to kind of be tight and painful. Only because your pretty much learning how to talk again and using different muscles. After the 5th day everyday the piercing got better and better. There was a huge improvement everyday!
  • It really depends on you...they tell you to relax because if your tongue tightens up (like mine did) then they have to force it through and then it hurts worse and theres usually bleeding...but if you relax it wont hurt at all...I took an ibuprofen about a half an hour before i got my tongue pierced and it really helped the swelling. The next day i was eating pizza and cheeseburgers...Ive had mine for over four years now and i have gauged it out to a 6ga now that experience hurt like HELL!!! gauging is more painful then just about anything...
  • When they pierced mine the clamp didnt hurt at all, but i think i tightened my tongue up cuz it hurt like a BITCH for me... But 3 days later i found out that the people that did it werent proffesionals, so they probably hit a nerve or something...
  • nahhh.. i just got my 4 days ago. it didnt hurt at all and i was tripping i thought it was gonna hurt so bad. but it was really nothing that i expected. the worst part about the wholething is that im hungry. lol the clamp didnt hurt at all ethier. Good Luck.. Its Worth it!
  • hey ! ime finkin bout gettin my tounge pierced n wa jus wonderin if it hurt alot ? i now it wil hurt bt how much coz am a bit of a wimp lol ... i allways get worked up ova fings n expect the worst bt wen i go 4 em dun dey dont actualli hurt tht much bt am jus a bit worried bout ma tounge coz int it menna b more sensetive ... neways i jus want summ ppl who got it dun n thier opinions plz ... fanx :) x x x x
  • i had my tongue done a couple of days ago, i heard tht it heard before i got it done & that it swells like a bitch but all i felt when having it dont was the needle going through and popping when came through the top, didnt hurt at all!!!!! and as for the swelling its not bothering me, i was eating solids the night i had it done! go for it!
  • A very sharp, very painful pinch.
  • well me and one of my homegurls went ad got it done around 2 months ago and they sed it wudnt hurt but honestly yes it did. it wasnt that bad but i felt it going in but i really thought it was worth it becasue once the swelling went down and i was able to eat regular food i think its really cute. i had no problem changing the rings and everyone loves it. I have one tip only and that is you should try not to bite down onn it when you are eating and i knows you heard this a million times but find a clean place.we did it kinda in a spur of the moment things but its really kewl. I talked to the guy first and got to trust him and then he clamped it with err one watching and then he did it.
  • it hurts not as bad as any other oral piercing. such as lip labret and web smiley ect. when you bite down on your tongue you are biting the muscles. when you get your tongue pierced you are getting it the middle of the two muscles and there is not alot of nerves there. so it may feel like a pinch. i have 12 piercing and the one that hurt the most was the back of my neck. the clamp hurts but the needle no way.
  • Everybody's different but I have had a lot of piercings, and I can say that my tongue hurt the less out of all of them. Infact, I didn't even really feel it at all. It was quick and easy but it all depends on how well u handle pain.
  • i pierced my tongue myself and it didnt hurt im not craaziii cause me being smart unlike professionals who pierce top to bottom, i went bottom to top paying close attencion to my veins.
  • I wouldn't know coz i'm not brave enough, but the tongue is one the places in a body with the most nerves. It's really quite sensitive, so i guess having a massive needle punched through several hundred nerves would hurt a whole flipping lot. Plus there are some major veins/arteries in there too. I don't wana put you off though, it seems that different people have different pain thresholds, whilst some feel hardly anything others feel really awful.
  • Had it done years ago. The actual piercing of it didn't hurt because it happened so quickly but I do remember hearing a like ripping sound. The worse part for me was the swelling afterwards. The guy that did it told me not to drink or smoke and to take it easy but I felt fine so I went to a party that same night. BIG mistake cuz my tounge swelled so big that it completely covered the bar and it was a long bar. I couldn't even take it out because it hurt so bad. My friends spent the next few days laughing at me (such good friends) and I could only eat soft foods for awhile after that. Years later I still have a hole mark on my tounge I think it will never go away. Oh well can't take this body with us when we go.
  • DON"T let them use the clamp, it causes more tissue damage and actually hurts worse. they didn't use it on mine just told me to stick it out put this thing under my tounge that looked like a long skinny lug nut wiped it with a paper towel and stuck it through didn't hurt at all it hurts worse to bite it than to pierce it if the place you are looking at uses clamps find somewhere else that doesn't
  • a few of my friends have had it done, and all of them have said that it doesn't hurt at all...i'm looking into it myself, so i can let you know for sure then!! :)
  • It feels like a hollow needle coring out the centre of your tongue. :)
  • It feels like my penis plus a hot curling iron *soooo goood*
  • it feels like alot of pressure depending on which way they go if its top to bottom it hurts because of ur taste buds taste the metal and it just freaks ur head out cause metal is in ur mouth and then pain but if u go from bottom to top its just alot of pressure u dont feel it as bad as u would think u can always use mouth wash before to numb it but i say its better to go bottom to top and no mouth wash cause then ur in for a lot of pain after the mouthwash wears off
  • I really want to get my tongue pierced but i am terrified of needles!! I'm worried that if i have it done i'm going to faint! I've got my belly button pierced which didn't hurt that much but i've heard that you can swallow your tongue in your sleep and suffocate! Is this true? And what hurts more having your belly button pierced or having your tongue pierced? Thanks xxx
  • its nothing really... but i geuss everyone is different so it really depends on how high your pain tolerance is
  • omg its great haha =] getting it pierced really isnt that bad.. the swelling kinda sucks and yeah.. for a few days 'ew thalk ike hiss' haha but after like a week its just the s's that are tricky and after a month you cant really tell plus its awesome=) oh.. quick tip though.. if your getting it pierced closer to the tip of ur tongue.. DONt go w/ stainless steal.. its is heavy and when it hits ur teeth its really uncomfortable.. acrylic is wayy better=]
  • has anyone with a low pain tolerance gotten it done? Both my boyfriend and his nephew have had theirs done for a while now, they say it feels weird with OUT it now. Is it easy to hide? I'm a senior at a catholic school andbid need to hide it.
  • It really depends on your tolerance for pain. Mine did not hurt at all, but my sister said hers hurt. When they put the clamp on all you feel is pressure on your tongue. The needle goes through, and I didnt feel a thing. They screw the balls on, take off the clamp and you are done :)
  • so i just got my tongue pierced like 5 days ago the best way i can explain it is that it feels like when you burn your tongue it doesn't really hurt its just annoying yes the clamp hurts a little but it helps you not think about the needle the only thing that bugs me is when i wake up in the morning sometimes theirs blood but after you clean the bleeding stops
  • I imagine it feels like getting your tongue in the middle of two car bumpers when they finally bump into each other in a parking lot.
  • well i think it hurt like hell but i did mine myself i used a 12g needle but yea i have to say it hurts
  • getting your tongue pierced doesnt really hurt. it just feels like your getting pinched on the bottom of your tongue other then that NOTHING i have had my tongue pierced for a WEEK and the swelling is gone. when they are piercing your tongue they clamp it which doesnt hurt you cant really feel it then the pierce it and is literally over in 2 seconds. PIECE OF CAKE.. xx
  • YEA SAME WITH ME MY MOM SAID I CAN GET MY TOUNGE PIERCED FOUND SOME RELLY CUTE JEWLERY BUT WHEN I HAVE TO GET A SHOT AT THE DOCTERS I CRY BUT THEN IT DOESNT EVEN HURT BUH I HATE HATE HATE NEEDLES UNLESS I DO IT MY SELF ON A SALE 1-10 HOW BAD DOES IT HURT?? THAXX <3
  • when i got mine done. i was so afriad.. the lady that did it said that your nose piercing hurts more so i was all calm.. the clamp didnt hurt me at all i dont know why.. the one thing that hurt me the most is the needle.. my bldy went into shock right after she got it through.. and my whole body was shaking and i was so terrified. but than again thats just how my body worked, everyone is different. alot my my friends said that there tongue was the leastest pain. i dont know about that.. but ya if yours does hurt. definitly use listerene on it every hour or so.. it numbs it and your good to go.. another thing that works is midol since it's a pain reliever.. anything like that will do..
  • it stings, but only very slightly
  • it's not painful... it's just uncomfortable for a few days
  • i just got my done about an hour ago... this is what happends.... they make u wash ur mouth out... the dry ur tounge off then put a dot where they will pierce it.... they clamp ur tounge to hold it out ( that didnt hurt me at all) then he said ok take a breath in.... and now out... it was done... i barley felt it... if you have ever bitten you tongue... that hurts worse than getting your tongue pierced.... so go for it.. it takes two seconds... the only part that i didnt like was when he tighted the balls after the piercing... it wasnt painful it just felt weird... it took 2 mins... not even... i was in and out... im not swollen or anything...i love it:) so go for i!!
  • I just got mine done on saturday, Im not much for needles and pain, But i decided to get it done and over with. And it really isnt that bad, before you know it it's over and done with, the clamp for me was kinda uncomfortible. But before you even know it there done. I must ensure you that it is sore for the first couple days, Mine is still sore. Make sure you eat alot b4 you go in, Cause it will be hard too eat for the first couple days. =) Hope that helped:)
  • I got mine done in october. I have a VERY LOW pain tolerance and it didnt hurt at all. The clamp is the only thing that was uncomfortable. Now after i got it pierced it hurt for about four days then i was almost back to normal. I had to take it out recently for surgery and i am about to go leave to have it redone! :)
  • it hurts but no were as bad as some pericings. The needle is hallow and if you are in a proper shop it will me a new needle each and everytime that they do a pericing. there will be no sliver of the needle that will be left behind. the worst part of it is the clamp. the clamp hurts because it puts pressure on your tongue that you are not use to. i would recommend keeping your eyes closed, so you don't see the needle going through and hold your breath that's what i did. I'm about a month out from getting mine done, and I'm able to play with it and everything but the healing is completely different for each person. i had almost no swelling. tenderness yes a lot of tenderness. eat ice for the 1st 24 hrs. i would do it again.
  • had mine done today! HURTS LIKE HELL!! To be honest i wouldnt put myself through it again, ive had nose and lip piercings that didnt come anywhere close to the pain. It now aches, i hope the pain doesnt get worse before getting better.....
  • the worst part is the clamp. it hurts but its worth it in the end. use sea salt rise. 1/4 teaspoon per 8 oz of warm water. if you are going to use the mouth was use 1 part yellow nasty tasting mouth wash to 3 parts water. i say use the cap of the mouth wash to do the parts. dont chew on it!
  • i really wantmy tongue peirced but im realy weird with needles and hate pain , i got my belly buttonn pierced ad nthat didnt really hurt me , whenu have ur tongue peirced can u feel the needle go through and do they numb it xx
  • i got it done last week... it doesnt hurt at all... most people say it does but all you feel is a little pressure, you feel more of the pain later on
  • I really want a percing either my belly-button or my tounge bt im terrified of needles! When i had my ears pierced i cried! how pathetic! Shud i pierce ot or not? And will it really hurt?
  • It feels VERY uncomfortable for about 10 minutes, but the pain is quick.
  • I got mine done just the other day.. The clamp was the only bit that hurt i didnt feel the needle go in at all... But im just sooo hungry now hahaha.. Did anyone else get tingles at the tip of their tongue for a few days?????
  • Im not sure whether i should get it done.. i havent got a very high pain threshhold.. :/ What do you think .. i was told that when it gets peirced it hurts less than when you bite down on your tongue.. is this true .. if soo ... How much does it hurt when it swells up ?
  • when getting it pierced u cant feel a thing....but after is the worse part..not10 but pain......
  • It doesn't really hurt, just a LOT of pressure, and it feels hot when the needle goes through. The next few days are really bad though!
  • I'll NEVER know!
  • I don't know. I'm not stupid enough to get it done.
  • the worst part is the clamp. The pressure from the clamp you are more then happy to get it off after the needle is through that you dont notice the pain. my guy does a count down and tells me to release my breath but for all piercings i hold mine. the pain you feel is nothing like biting your tongue it more of a slow throb like when you stub a finger or thumb and it lasts a while. take 2 aspirins and a sea salt rinse the pain is not to bad just be careful when your eating and what your eating. do not eat anything spicy for at least a month and salty food a month also or you will sound like a dieing cat. and when eating take your time. it hurts like nothing you have ever felt when you bite on the ball.
  • yea it hurts.i was so scared wen i was getting it done in fact i was shaking && nervous lol.they take the clamp and hold your tongue between it and shovve the needle through the bottom of your tongue ((i cried )) and screw the ball on it.then i had to rinse it and cudnt talk rite and wen i did talk i drooled a lot.haha but i love my piercing now.it also depends on your pain tolerance.which mine was not high, but depends on the person.!! hope it helped :D
  • Like somebody making a hole in your tongue with a needle.
  • is it hard to hide????
  • What does it feel like to be in a position to even want to? I don't get it.
  • Um, when she had the needle half threw my tongue felt numb you dont feel anything. But when she screws the ball on its pain.
  • i got my tongue pierced two days ago... was really nervous cuz of all the horror stories i had heard. i must say that it didnt hurt at all, you can feel the needle pushing through which feels a little weird but no pain.. at the moment eating is quite difficult and it gets a little sore if i talk for a while but i can talk perfectly no lisps or anything and not too much swellin cuz i keep drinking cold water.. if you want to get it done then go for it, as long as you go to the right piercer that is recommended then there should be no pain at all..but i guess everyones different.
  • it didnt hurt when i got it, but a few hours later it started to hurt and swell and a couple days later it still hurted and i couldnt eat or talk rite and i didnt like the fact that i couldnt eat rite so after 3 days i took it out..now i want another one i didnt give it time to see how it was going to turn out...
  • i got my tongue pierced two days ago. it didnt hurt getting it pierced as the piercer froze it with a gel but i felt a really sharp pain as the needle went in, this was over in 1 second and doesnt last long at all. now my tongues swollen but it's not that sore. ice poles are my best friend for the next 10 days
  • It hurts and is swollen for a few days and then you have a cool little mouth toy to play with.
