In 1902, a London dentist named Jack Marles invented the first mouth guards for boxers. The devices were originally designed for use during training, and the English welterweight Ted "Kid" Lewis, who reigned from 1915 to 1919, was the first professional to regularly wear one in the prize ring. Widespread use of mouth guards began in the 1920's.

Actually the dentist name was Jack Marks. In 1913, Ted "Kid" Lewis was the first boxer to use a protective mouthpiece. It was designed for him by his dentist, Jack Marks, himself a former fighter.
