Back in the day if someone was going to purchase a horse, they would look at its teeth to check the horses condition. So, basically it's saying if someone gives you a horse, don't check it's teeth. Always be grateful for what you are given.

Just what the other two said. You can tell the age and partly it health by looking at the teeth. To check a gift out, example: someone gives you a ring and while they are looking you check to see what caret gold it is. It's just bad form.
