  • Wikipedia is run by The Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization. It doesn't make a profit, but it does need to raise money, primarily to buy new servers and keep the site running.   • The money is gathered from people who visit their site, frequent users are more likely to donate compared to a first-time visitor who would be alienated by a site asking for a donation. In a very eloquent and unintruding manner they ask for a donation and there is also a promise of the visitors being listed as a donator in a special page which is updated frequently. According to modern psychology studies, depending on how useful a website has been to a person (The end user), such is the amount that the person will feel obliged to give in return as to not self-critisize themselves as being ungiving. Donating for a good cause is something good.
