In California, the sale is not final until you drive off the lot with the car. So if you change your mind AND didn't take delivery, you aren't bound to pay for the vehicle.

In New Jersey the same holds true. You take legal possession when you drive off the premises with the paperwork signed and you are issued a temporary registration.

As an aside, if you put down a deposit for a waiting list car, you might not get that back, depending on the dealership.

It depends on where you live. In most states in the U.S. there is a 3 day hold on all contractual agreements.

All contracts have a three day waiting period anyhow. If you didn't take the car off the lot, you should be safe.
