  • You need a gateway between your subnet and the other subnet. If there is one connected, it's usually at the IP address: <your IP address> bitwise-AND <your subnet mask> + 0.0.0.1 So for example, the address of your gateway would be 192.168.45.1. So your computer, when it finds that an IP address is on another network, obtains the ethernet address of the gateway and send the packet to the gateway instead of to another computer. The gateway is in charge of routing it to the next "hop", and so on till it reaches it's destination. To go farther than just a neighboring subnet, more complicated routing is required, and is a whole other subject.
