Any time you get a 3rd or 4th major party you end up fractionalizing everything and you end up like itally with 157 "major" paries and another 3 minor ones. And 3rd party candidates make changes to politics w/o needing to get elected. When a 3rd party candidate gets enough votes to effect a major political race the other 2 parties pick up on the main idea and start pushing it as well making the idea more mainsteam. And that's why we've survived as long as we have in a 2 party system.
