  • If you are having sex the "obvious" way, face, to face, then lips tend to come in contact any way and kissing is "obvious". Then you may well do it as a sign of affection without going the whole way. So I would guess that it started not long after the pre-human female turned round for sex.
  • From what I have read, kissing began as a way to seal a pact, much like shaking hands. I remember reading a story about a Roman man who kissed his wife's lips to determine whether she had been drinking. Kissing solely for romantic purposes is actually a fairly recent development, only the last 1500 - 2000 years or so.
  • Kissing is really only a Western culture thing except for the Indian Kamasutra. All other people don't do it as part of their sexual or romantic traditions, though some do it only to children to calm them or to say goodbye between all sexes. Some people claim it comes from grooming and smelling each other, a sharing of food as well. But they really don't know.
