Sax and clarinet are more versatile than the bassoon, and between clarinet and saxophone I always lean towards the sax. Clarinets can play jazz and classical, but saxes can literally be added to any type of music--salsa, rock, polka, dance, you name it--and fit in.

The clarinet is used in the most genres, classical and jazz. The saxophone is used mainly in jazz and pop. The bassoon, like the oboe, is pretty much limited to classical. It is certainly possible to play jazz on the bassoon and the other double-reeds, but this would be unusual.

none of them are "better" than each other. they are all unique, and sometimes alike, in different ways. but i personally prefer bass clarinet :)
