Sounds like clogged fuel injector. Is it the 2.0 F.I. engine? They were notorious for that.

Could be the supply line is clogged, bent, or something is restricting it. It could still be the fuel pump, it might not be pumping enough to keep up, but still pumping. Which would explain why it died, but then started a little later. Like it couldn't keep up, then had time to fill the lines, and still adding a little while running and then died a while later because it couldn't keep up. Best to have a mechanic take a look.
