New? Not at all. In the Bible (N.T.), wealth is referred to as "Mammon" at least once. ("You can't serve God and Mammon.") Some scary images of Mammon here: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=mammon&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2 Not for the squeamish. Not for children. Don't look unless you are at least 85 y/o, with one foot in the grave. Addendum: I found a cartoon that's not scary.

It always has been, I think. It's just that those who worship money are getting more in-your-face about it..before it was embarrassing to admit you were that shallow, venal and selfish..they're the ones whose mantra is "he who has the most toys wins"..the be-all and end-all of life is "stuff"..the more expensive "stuff" you have, the more you preen about as if you're singularly unique, special and well, better than those who have less "stuff". cetainly not my own but I think for many money has been god for a looooong time. Nowadays I think that god is getting pushed aside for power and technology..which I guess are still parts of money and wealth..I guess they come in a package..kinda like the christian holy trinity; money, power, technology
