Try this book.. Alternative Kilns & Firing Techniques: raku, saggar, pit, barrel -- by James C. Watkins and Paul Andrew Wandless I found it at my local library so you might check to see if your library carries it as well. Otherwise, you can buy it on Amazon. I think it's just what you're looking for. Hope it helps! : )

You can raku pit fired pots. It would be best if your pots were bisque fired first. It can be difficult and time consuming to get a pit firing to the temps you would need, but it can be done and it can be done with materials that cost nothing.

All you need is some Cement blocks for the base. build it up with fire bricks (leave room at the bottom for the Propane torch thingy. build a wire cage lined with Ceramic Fiber to top it off. You can get the supplies for a raku kiln for about $500 or less, including propane tank. Do a google search for "RAKU KIT" and you'll find a bunch of places that sell them. here's one: http://www.wardburner.com/burnersparts/rakukilnkits.html

yes i recently discoverd a realy great book, in which you use an old 50-gal, cleaned out oil drum-you cut the top portion off, fitting it with a handle, then in the bottom side dril a hole to allow the tip of a blow torch to pass through, then you fire it with a propane tank, as well youll need to add a few vent holes at about 10-12 inches from the top side section, happy fireing
