It does not matter, except to the people who were involved. Do you owe an explanation to someone? If so, i would think that it is really none of their business.

Only in the sense that if the "how" or "why" was the result of shortcomings in your character or your approach to relationships, it would help you to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future.

Yes it matters as you could place yourself in the same situation with a really wonderful person and that too could end if you don't learn something from your experiences.

I guess if its obvious to both of you then it doesnt so much matter. But if both arent clear on it then a reason should be expressed - preferrably in person.

Yes, it matters. How do you learn from your mistakes, if you dont know why you are broke up.

I don't see what difference it would make. If one party is the aggrieved party and gets all whiny and teary eyed, how does that change anything? It just makes you very annoying and gives more reason for the person who broke up with you to justify his/her action. I'd suck it up silently and move on. :)
