Because people often think in the short term. They think about immediate benefits and disregard the future. But, sometimes people do things that never help them. There are some reasons for this. Some people like the feeling of pain. Some people do it to hurt others. Some people people don't know it hurts them or is bad for them.

For some it is self destructive, for others rebellion or habit. It varies alot from person to person. Fear of change is also very common. Changing what is routine for us, even though harmful is difficult for most people. Quitting smoking (or not) is a good example.

It depends on the degree on "badness" and whether the effect is felt immediately, in the short term or many years from the moment. Generally, the longer something takes to make its presence felt, the more or bigger chances someone will take. Things like unhealthy eating, zero exercise, smoking, unsafe/risky sex, excessive alcohol, some drugs (but I have no understanding/knowledge of their effects) and unhealthy personal relationships tend to have implications that take some time to show their effect. People then weigh up the benefit to them NOW with the alleged negative effect of something some time away and which may not happen TO THEM. Stupid things like jumping off a building, or walking alone into a dangerous area at night tends to focus the mind pretty sharply and so usually most people won't do those things.
