Deliberate neglect by those who were supposed to be responsible. Plenty of people had been warning about it for years. The neglect was everywhere. While the lenders were very irresponsible, that still doesn't let the irresponsible borrowers off the hook. We've all spent twelve years at school, we all had the opportunity to learn heaps of maths. And this is the punishment people get for neglecting maths. (The people who are good at maths are being punished for not taking control of the rest of the population and saying, "What the hell are you thinking?")
