Is it ironic that for the windmill, said be a dependable source of energy to help get us off of oil, to work right they actually have to stay well oiled?

The issue here is that even if, right now, we could get totally off oil for our energy needs, we would still need it. Lubricants for most machines come from oil, for that matter plastic requires oil. It is a vital part of our everyday existence. As for windmills, I do not believe they are that dependable. The wind does not always blow and even when someone gets serious about putting some in the same bunch of eco-fascist wackos who push for them start opposing them on the grounds that they interfere with the birds' flight paths. Its impossible to satisfy those people. But I digress. I think windmills have potential but they are not an end-all, be-all solution. Part of a solution? Definitely but not the whole picture.
