It depends what it is and where it was lost. Does it require the intervention of the police or do you need to go to the lost and found office at a station or was it at home etc etc? A friend of ours lost 450 dollars. At least, she put it in a safe place and couldn't remember where is was. She was so distressed that she couldn't find it that she went to a hypnotist and was hypnotised.....and....she remembered where is was under hypnosis. For less important things I try to remember when I used it the last time and what for. I ask myself; Which room I was in in the house? Was it me who had it last? Did I have anything else in my hand at the same time? etc etc. I hope you find it.:)
