    Vaseline was discovered in 1859 by Robert Augustus Chesebrough, a chemist working in the oil industry. The idea for creating Vaseline petroleum jelly came to him when he observed that oil workers healed their burns and abrasions with an oil residue they called ‘rod wax’. He perfected the extraction process, producing a translucent, odourless jelly. Chesebrough became his own guinea pig, inflicting himself with numerous cuts, even burning his skin with acid and fire.
