Back in the day (before the end of the 1970s), at all levels of football (NFL, NCAA, High School), all scrimmage kicks were treated the same if they didn't score a field goal. In other words, if they didn't go over the crossbar and between the uprights, placekicks and dropkicks were treated just like punts. I believe High School rules still follow that line of reasoning. The NFL and NCAA certainly don't anymore. Short Answer: Your high school team would get the ball where it rolled dead or went out-of-bounds, not back at the spot of the kick. Don't take this as gospel, though. They could change that rule at any time since several teams have adopted the habit of placekicking on 4th down no matter how far they are from the goal posts.
