  • here are two main groups, associated with the two main divisions of Islam: the Shias and the Sunnis. They are fighting about which group should dominate the country, or particular areas. The Shias are the largest group in the country, and feel that they should "naturally" run it and dominate the government. But Saddam Hussein was a Sunni, and favoured Sunnis in his regime and in the country. The Sunnis therefore feel that they have lost out and will be pushed to the side and ignored in the new Iraq. Each side fears and suspect the other, and doesn't want the other living near them. This is leading to increasing violence. As a third entry, the Kurds in the north don't want to be ruled by either Shias or Sunnis. They want independence, and they have already got close to independence in their areas.
