Enhanced Definition Television. Televisions have "scan lines" - horizontal lines of picture information stacked one above another on the screen. EDTV means that instead of "drawing" the odd numbered horizontal lines on every other screen refresh and the even numbered horizontal lines between odd refreshes (interlacing) the device renders all of the lines sequentially (progressive scan), putting all the information on the screen each redraw instead of only half. When done well, it makes the picture more detailed and more stable.
