The "proper slang" among musicians for what you need is a "fake book" -- something that provides enough information to allow you to play along with the band without sounding like you're completely on another planet :) Armed with that phrase and the name of the song you want, you should be able to Google yourself to success. Just google the song title and the word "tabs" or "tablature". There are dozens of tab-based transcription sites out there with fairly thorough and accurate tabs for all kinds of songs.
