upside down? usually if you plug it in wrong it won't fit, so you'd have to really jam it in. the plug would then be damaged. that's all i know about this topic

Can you be a little more descriptive?? You cannot plug anything in upside down. Well here in the USA most plugs and outlets have one side bigger than the other, preventing you from plugging anything in the wrong way.

It will do neither. Some plugs will have one of the blades widened so that you can only plug it in one way. If you were to jamm it in upside-down, the live and neutral wires from the outlet would be swapped to your equipment, that's all, no harm done. Besides, the electrician who wired your house, may have swapped the wires by mistake when he/she hooked up the outlet. The result is a minor compromise in safety. Minor, because the 'first line of defence' is in the design of the equipment, i.e. VCR, hair dryer, fridge, etc.

If one blade is wider than the other it is a polarized plug. They are generally used on an appliance with a switch. Plugged in correctly the switch will turn off the power, not the common.
