Does anyone else remember when kids were "promised" before becoming formally engaged?

Aww how cute I wish my boyfriend would give me a promis ring today...I'm so jealous of older people all of the Nice and cool things they got to experiance. But I'm way to young to remember its only a thing I see in old fashion movies :(

Oh memories, memories. Yes, I remember. Back in the 30-40's they got their boyfriends fraternity pin or class ring. Sometimes the girl got the guy's high school school ring, wrapped in angora or something so it would fit the girls smaller sized finger, or she wore it on a chain around her neck. That was big in the 50's-early 60's. Later, guys started giving a "promise ring." Not sure what it is now. A car? Nice question Momma! :)

Sure my friend is 18 and he has been promised before. I don't know if that means much these days because that was the first thing I learned in college, everyone has probably been engaged atleast once.

To me, being 'promised' is pretty much the same thing as being engaged lol, maybe the only difference is a little delay until the actual engagement. Isn't an engagement a promise in itself anyway?
