  • Can you point me to the MLB rule that covers this? Thanks!
  • No, it is not the correct call unless the umpire judged the batter/runner intentionally interfered with the ball. A thrown ball (and in this play the pitch has now become a thrown ball) is not treated the same as a batted ball under the rules. 7.08 Any runner is out when (b) He intentionally interferes with a thrown ball... Look at the play under the doctrine of common sense and fair play. Whose error or misplay put the ball into the batter/runner's path? The defense's error. The defense misplayed the ball, it deflected off the catcher, and into the path of the batter/runner who was only doing what he was supposed to do - attempt to run to first base. It would not stand to reason that you would call the batter/runner out because the defense failed to execute the play. To call interference on a thrown ball, intent is almost always necessary. No intent to interfere, no interference.
  • No that's the wrong call....the ball was put into play by the defense not the offense...such as the runner coming in contact with the ball when hit...the runner came in contact with a defensive ball and there for is safe at first.
