I used to take a protein shake before and then eggs and whole grain bread afterwords, but I have found that not taking the shake before works best for me. I also supplement with BCAA ( Branched Chain Amino Acid) to help build lean muscle and it also gives me a little pump when working out.

carbs before for energy. Protein after for rebuilding the muscle you tore down.
