OBAMA is not AFRICAN AMERICAN so why are people acting like he is.None of his ancestors were slaves.His Dad Is Kenyan& His mom is white so he's a mulatto!!!?

I really don't understand why so many people living in a country which probably has the most ethnically diverse population on the entire planet have so many issues with and so many questions about this issue.

The man is seeking the highest political office in his country and the only important issue is whether or not he has the ability to successfully hold that office.

I would be much more impressed with the political nous of you and your countrymen if you restricted yourself to important matters in your political debates, rather than ethnicity, whether pigs wear lipstick and whether a female candidate is "hot".

- I didnt start it! And I could care less either! But its the Media and the Blacks that cannot say President Barack Obama without saying the word 'Black'. Its a racial gesture and its not true. I guess now, the whites can use the "Race Card" when they feel the President is not giving back to them. Since I guess the president is JUST black and his white mother wasnt real.

Kenya is in Africa. That makes Obama's ethnic heritage part-African. Most African Americans weren't actually born in Africa, their ancestors were.

Nor do you need to have ancestors who were slaves to count as ''African'' or ''African American''. Just as you don't need to work in McDonald's to be considered an American.

- I think s/he's trying to say Obama is trying to be something he isn't, misleading the masses. And while he isn't the typical African American you'll find wandering around the Bronx ''wif da ho'', he is African American all the same. Because racism and prejudice is not rational.

Obama has about as much in common with the typical South-Central LA street urchin as I do with someone from Outer Mongolia.

But because his skin color, facial features and hair fit certain stereotypes, people will see him as 'the same' as the aforementioned street urchin.

As are lots of U.S. born African Americans. And, from my view of the world map, Kenya is actually in Africa. As far as we now know, his ancestors were not slaves.
So, what's the problem. I'll bet all African Americans born in the US didn't all have slave ancestors either.

- It was common practice in ancient Greece and Rome to have slaves a lots of them were white. Slavery has been present through history from the Jewish people in Egypt to today's child and adult slavery as it exists in many countries.

Ok and this matters why? I really don't care what color his skin is or who he is "acting like" I care about his views on foreign policy. I care about his views on abortion. I care about what he's going to do about education in this country. I care about what his track record on important issues is like. He can dress in yellow and call himself a banana for all I care.

I was having a conversation with some friends and we all want to know. Hold on cowboy/tex. Obama is both African, and he is an American citizen. Therefore he is African American.

Well, he's got a whole helluva lot more african in his genes than any other president we've ever had.

And from what I can tell from the White supremacists here in Oregon and nearby- they don't seem to care that he's half.

They'd still be willing to take out either half to get rid of him.

Okay in general the term african american is directly associated with black people whose ancestors were african slaves here in america, Not a nigerian , kenyan, ethiopian crossed with a white person. Martin luther king was black american, rosa parks was black american, harriet tubman was black american.

- Does that mean slaves were not African American, because they were 1st generation slaves? Anybody who doesn't have an ancestor who was a slave in the US, but whose parents are African is not African American -- and in fact doesn't have African heritage because their ancestors didn't serve white slave owners? - My skin isn't white, it's a peachy colour -- but usually instead of being precise about shades of pink and brown, we separate people into black or white skinned. I think you'll find that's a pretty accepted system, you won't find anybody who is actually black or white.

- well that depends because if you're not white than people won't classify you as white,they'll classify you based on your race.There are some black people that look white,but they are not classified as white they are still included in the black race.Black americans and white americans are the only ones called either black or white ( a color)! asians are asians, hispanics are hispanics, jamaicans are jamiacans etc. you should get the point!

Besides the point that Kenya is in Africa, I have to say that I personally hate when people ask me, "What are you?" I say, I'm a homo sapien, what are you?

On job applications, I state: "My ethnicity does not affect my ability to perform job related duties".

He has said that is not that he considers himself to be of black or of white descent. It is very simple, he says that he has always been treated as a black man, mostly because he looks that way, so as he grew up, that is exactly what he felt like being. I don't think that people voted for him to be the next president of the U.S because of his skin color, however, in a country where segregation is unfortunately still a reality in some places, the fact that a man of his appearance was elected is a big deal! Now leave it alone and let the man do his job, it's not an easy job and people are still making a big deal out of the fact that he is black! He is the president, because he is the best person for the job. Period.

- He was voted for because of his appearance, that is obvious. Ask ant black person and they will tell you it is true, and a lot of white people voted for him so they wouldn't be called racist. I was only saying that, in my opinion, because I am entitled to have one, he was the best among the competition, and I don't think skin color had anything to do with that. I do understand that a lot of people felt that he was the better option because of his skin color.
  In the end all politicians are the same, white, black or any other color.

Americans of all colour like to classify EVERYONE. The only reason why this is an issue in regard to PRESIDENT OBAMA, is that there are those who would prefer that he not be PRESIDENT. They spew their lies about him being born in another country and they call him a Muslim. If I may add, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING A MUSLIM! Furthermore, there is such a thing as a terrorist who happens to be a christian.

Whatever he is doing is his job and responsibilities so the colour or race does not make any difference in the performace his duties and which country the person is originated is not the main issue

you don't need ancestral slaves to be an african american. You just need a black/brown skin tone and your african american.

African American term refers to people of certain physical characteristics.

- No, it doesn't. There are plenty of people in the US with Asian (for example Indian) ancestors who have dark skin and they are most certainly not African Americans. African American refers to having ancestors from, or being originally from, Africa.
