I'm not very good at technical Music Theory mumbo jumbo, but if my understanding is right, he was the first jazz musician to use this special "time". Sorry, probably not very helpful.

Miles was one of those rare musicians who was revolutionary more than once. He was a key figure in the development of "cool" jazz. Listen to the "Birth of the Cool" sessions for that. He started the whole "modal" style of jazz with the album "Kind of Blue". He then helped pioneer "hard bop" with his 1960's group with Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Finally, he was a key figure in the development of jazz-rock fusion.
