  • Convenience. The people of Los Angeles voted to re-build a metropolitan rail system after having dismantled the extensive system that city had 50 years ago. After the measure passed and construction was started a poll was taken to discover why a population so in love with the automobile would vote for an expensive mass transit rail system. The result of the survey found that many people voted in favor of the measure because they assumed if Los Angeles had a rail system then other people would use it, thus reducing the number of cars on the freeway, and therefore making driving a private car easier for the voter. It is all based on selfishness. It’s human nature.
  • It is easier to bring packages and groceries home in your own vehicle.
  • I am a lawyer in the area of complex litigation. I consider myself relatively green. However, my "files" are banker's boxes that can fill up my entire car. I always want to ride the bus, but my files are to big to get to the courthouse without a car! But because you reminded me, I will make more of an effort on days where I have a light load.
  • TIME. Many cities use buses as their only mode of public transportation. While express routes (from suburbs to downtown/metro areas) are beneficial, many city routes are very slow and it may take several transfers to get where you need to be. Not to mention, that a lot of them are unreliable. In Las Vegas, I lived 9 miles from work, yet it took me 2 transfers and, on average, 1 1/2 - 2 hours to get to work (if all buses ran on schedule). So, in order to guarantee that I was at work by 8:30 am, I had to catch my first of 3 different buses at 5:45 am. I usually didn't get home until around 7:30 or 8:00 pm.
  • Bcause they do not care about the environment. They are lazy and selfish. lol
  • They have a stereotype in their head that only poor and lower class people ride the bus. They might be dropping kids off to school/daycare and getting 2 or 3 busses is really inconvenint, especially on rainy days. They might have lots of stuff to carry. Maybe the bus in their neighbourhood doesn't go to their destination and they would have to wait and transfer a couple of times.
  • in the area i live in the public transoport is rubbish. buses turning up late or not at all, and taxis, even prebooked the day before, its more convenient to drive your own car and more freedom, you can leave when YOU want not when the bus says you should leave! i used to be about a 20 min drive away from my work and to get a bus i had to leave over an hour b4 i should have! i still dont drive but now only live a 10 min walk away a lot healthier for me and the enviroament
  • I'll guess at laziness mostly, and habit, both poor excuses in my opinion
