If you want the Aero theme and glass effects, you should have at least 1 GB. But if you're more concerned with functionality, 512 MB should be okay.

ive heard 4 gigs i have 2gigs in my XP and its starting to seem slow.

I wouldn't run Vista with under 1GB period, 2GB if I wanted to use Aero. If I wanted to run fairly fast, I'd max it out to 4GB. Vista likes RAM.

1GB will run it fine, but you're best off with 2.

The 32-bit version of Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium only supports 4 GB of address space, so you'll find it will only be able to handle a maximum of about 3GB RAM. This is what you should aim to install.
