It's a simple Italian restaurant serving wine by the glass as well as regional cuisine. They can be more upscale, with fancy dishes, but the originals were sort of hang-out spots, where people could drink wine (always a sort of cheap red it seems), eat snacks, play cards, gossip, etc. Sort of a Mediterranean take on the coffeeshop ideal.
