Indeed, the Kosovo was part of the medieval Greater Serbia. In the crucial and legendary battle of Kosovo Polje (1389) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kosovo the Serbs fought the Ottomans. It is because of these historical roots that the relations between the Albanian and Serbian population living there is so extremely troubled (but also because of 20th century history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian-Albanian_Conflict )

This is a nationalistic policy that some Serbians (such as the deceased former leader Slobodan Milosevic) and some current leaders use to rationalize holding on to Kosovo, — where ethnic Albanians represent 90 percent of its 2 million people — and keep it within Serbia's fold. Most famous orthodox monastery's are there. Sure the majority of the population are albanians, but its the politics of openness towards those who ran from Albania during the fierce communist regime that brought to that situation. Many albanians never even took the Yugoslavian citizenship. But they still wanted to create another country. Maybe they could even make a third in Macedonia. Or just sistematically drive macedonians out like they did to serbs in Kosovo. And there will always be rude asimillation of others. They will never be able to live in peace with others. Not while they are a majority. They are a tribal nation.
