Wow. up for three minutes, someone comes in and clicks a negative 3, gives no reason in comment nor answer form, and leaves? Cool it is those unexplained mysteries of life, even though some choose to bring no understanding onto how to make it a clearer journey as we live it. I was certain the question was a valid one, and came with disrespect unto anyone of concern. Be well, and peace!

A GOOD or a meaningful piece, be it musical or phrase or look, is always copied or imitated ( I guess this is a compliment !) The Ideas or meanings these pieces represent, generally, gets lost. why do we do this? greed, selfish, fame, you name it,... ( well this may not be correct, but it is an answer ! lol ;) (and my thoughts on the matter)

This question made me get my dusty thinking cap out of the drawer. I started to think about the history of black and white music and their differences - the possible causes and reasons for those differences, but then I realised that it boils down to the simple fact that black music is good and people like it. Consider the music scene 80 years ago where I live in the UK. You had the choice of listening to either Jazz or Noel Coward; I know what would have been on my spinning on my gramophone. Black music appeals because everyone can identify with it.

I disagree with your assertion that music of the modern era has been led by African American culture, but rather that its rhythm and other stylistic elements have naturally worked their way into other styles of music. As for why 'whites' listen to hip/hop or talk the slang, I can't really say-I don't encounter it amongst my own peers but I have observed the aforementioned phenomenon when I am in ethnically mixed neighborhoods. It appears to be more of an attempt to acclimate to the environment than a choice based on personal taste

Media defines our culture. So if Hip-hop and Rap are on TV, that becomes part of the viewing audience's culture, whether the audience is black or white. In some cases, whites appropriate the music style and make their own version, stripping off the cultural connotations and rewriting the message. I guess if some whites feel they can't identify with their own culture, they might as well try somebody else's (to support this, there are also a number of white Americans that adopt some measure of other cultures such as Japanese, Nordic, etc).

How do you figure Music's modern era has been led by African American Culture?? I suppose if all you watch is mtv you could get this misconception. Mtv plays what sells, and rap right now sells.. Any culture that grab & talk's it, Is only doing so because they see it on tv, and think it will get them attention. Here is a disturbing thought for ya. The Columbine shootings. There is a wave of school shootings directly after one is reported all over the nation.. Why? Because these followers (just like in music) are looking for their 10 seconds of air time..

i might add that although all of the mentioned music forms were innovated and heavily influenced by african culture, they did not develop in a vacuum. other forms of music and other cultures helped in their inception. the non-traditional tuning of the blues guitar was adopted form the chinese tuning standard for instance. many white people contributed gretly to the development of jazz, while many latinos played a major role in the early stages of the hip-hop culture. of course, i don't discredit or invalidate the major role that black people have played, and continue to play, in all of these music forms.
