You have the sum of three terms, each the square of a binomial (I hope that's what the 2 after the parentheses means) and it equals zero. No matter what the values of x, y, and z -- positive or negative -- any real number squared is non-negative. If the sum of three non-negative terms = 0 then each term must = 0. Make sense? It follows that x=3, y=4, and z=5 Hence x + y + z = 12 By the way, it would have been clearer to write: (x-3)^2 + (y-4)^2 + etc. ^ (shift-6, circumflex or 'hat') is used to indicate raising to a power.
