I think that sometimes it's the potential importance that a person has which drives your efforts. Take dating for example, you work like a slave to get in but do you work that hard to stay in?

There are a lot of things that I say no to, just because those people would never do the same for me if I needed it, or it is the only time they ever talk to me - when they need something. However, for people like my parents and a very close friend, I don't care what is going on, I will gladly drop it and take care of their need/want.

If I don't care about someone, why on earth would I exert any effort on his/her behalf? If you are talking about my son..I'd give my life for him or try to move heaven and earth for him. If you're talking about an empty-headed celebrity, about whom I care not a whit..why would I even think about him/her?
