Hands down, the SR-71 Blackbird. An engineering marvel. Essentially designed in the 1950's, built in the 1960's and to this day still holds the world record for fastest aircraft with air-breating engines. http://www.sr-71.org/blackbird/sr-71/ Second favorite would be the Japanese Kyushu J7W1 Shinden. This was an advanced canard design (tail first) with radically forward swept wings and a tail mounted 6 bladed prop. It was in development and flight testing phases at the very end of WWII. Here are a couple links: http://www.eagle.ca/~harry/aircraft/shinden/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJs1O2HSosE

A bit about the Skua... It was the first carrier-based Aircraft to ever sink another ship (It was the German light cruiser Koenigsberg during the invasion of Norway) http://www.fleetairarmarchive.net/Aircraft/Skua.htm I think we all know about the Harrier. And how it is a British invention, not American!
