  • I would start by checking when the movie was made. If a movie is still within the copyright range, it is only public domain if the copyright holder gave it to the public. Thus, if it is outside the range, you know it is public domain. If it is still in the range, then simply ask the copyright holder (or production company if different). If they put it in the public domain, they have no reason to lie to you.
