  • One word, Chivalry.
  • I think you just summed it up yourself. It's because of tradition and culture. Things are changing thesedays though, although it's still very rare to see a woman propose.
  • 'cos in the old days the bloke was the provider. If he proposed, it was like saying, "I want to keep you. Look, I got money / land / whatever to keep you alive." If the woman proposed, she'd look like a beggar - "Will you provide for me?" In future years, if the husband was a bad provider then the woman had the right to complain, "Why aren't you looking after me? ... and the children?" If she had proposed then the bloke would just reply, "It's not my fault. You're the one who wanted to marry me!"
  • I like it that way. I wouldn't propose to anyone. I know it's the 21st century and women want to be able to do everything that men do...I think with those whose loves are of the same sex, they will find a way to work it out. But as for me, I like the old-fashioned way..the demure, ladylike, gracious, graceful way.
  • Because when a man takes a wife its suppose to mean something that he loves her..that he is the breadwinner, he is taking her out of her safe home with parents and with him...It should be him who propose
  • Because tradition had it that the man was the head of the household and the main provider, decider, and he would ask the father of the woman for permission to wed her. Most decisions were made by men.
  • I am pretty sure my wife proposed to me. She wont admit it. Each one of us have different stories. It was a short engagement.
