I always thought it was for change and I also heard for a watch. The pocket type.

We always called them watch pockets when I was a kid. All the farm kids in my area growing up had "Baby Ben" pocket watches and we kept them in that pocket. We only wore wrist watches to town on saturday or sunday and occasionally to school.
