The easiest, legal way you could find out would be to burn some sage.... can be found in grocery stores if you dont already have some on the spice rack. It smells very similar. In fact, be sure to burn it outside and shower afterwords... or someone might make assumptions O.o Also be careful about inhaling it. While it's probably harmless, I've found it can give you a headache.

Marijuana and its has a distinctive smell, there isn't anything I can possibly think of that mimics the smell of marijuana smoke. It's uncomparable to tobacco.

It smells like burning rope. Heavy ropes such as those used in construction are made of hemp. It smells something like a brush fire. For example, when grass seed growers sometimes set fire to their fields. Southern California has frequent brush fires that smell a bit like pot. If you are a parent and wonder what that funny smell is, it's probably pot.

It's a little piney and a tad skunky but with a sweet herb rack smell...
Pot smells different depending on the plant and the quality. Low end stuff burns more woody. High end is more pungent and pronounced like black pepper.
Many things can smell like it... especially if you're not familiar with it... so if you're trying to catch someone in the act, double and triple check before you start making accusations.

smells like herbs, skunky dank herbs. Some of the really good weed smells almost like coffee sometimes. And sometimes it smells like sage or something its very distinctive if i had to put my finger on a legal herb that smells like weed it would have to be like burning hops, if you know what hops are, they are a distant relative to the cannabis plant.

I have heard that moxa or moxibustion smells exactly like weed, it's used to stimulate blood-flow in acupuncture.
You could visit an acupuncturist and ask to smell some of the moxa.

Obviously, it's hard to describe how something smells. Smoking marijuana basically smells like smoking a cigarette, but with a greenish tone in it :-)
The easiest solution may be to find a hemp plant and try smelling it. Or find somebody who smokes marijuana. He can show you how it smells.
If you smell that somebody smoked, but it doesn't smell like pipe tobacco or a cigarette or something else that you know, chances are he's smoking marijuana.

This sounds rather weird, but the britney spears perfume "Fantasy" .. you can get hand cream for it. The hand cream is sweet and has that distinct smell of weed. try it! trust me .. !
