Same place it is in most cars. Over 98% of them are inside the dashboard behind the radio. I don't know how hard it is to remove the entire dashboard and center console on an Intrepid, but even an '89 Golf is a bitch and those things are less enclosed than most modern cars. My experience is that head gaskets are easier to get at and replace on most cars.

give it up and pay the 300-500 to replace it. I tried to do a heater core once and the dash never got put back together... never reached the core either
